Is it Time to Hire a Consultant?

I don’t normally do this, as I like to create as much of my own content as I can to share with my clients, prospects, and monthly Blog audience; however, I read an article last month by the Champion Group, a fundraising consultant business in Birmingham Alabama, that I just had to connect with and ask if it would be okay to borrow this information below, naturally if I recognize them for this, so thanks Champion Group for agreeing to this ?.

Working in the non-profit realm can be tricky. You are not trying to make money, but you need money to operate. You are constantly walking the tightrope of providing a must have service for people, yet you cannot overcharge or oversell in case you lose the people who are paying your salary. There is a delicate balance that you must find to keep your doors open. But no one has ever taught you how to find that balance, much less maintain it! So, who do you call to help ensure you don’t fall off of that tightrope? Well, have you considered a consultant?

Many people balk at the idea of hiring a consultant. Why pay someone to come in and do a job that I should be able to do? The reason you should hire a consultant to help your organization is because that individual has experience of finding and maintaining that balance.

So often in non-profit work there is an assumption that those working for an organization will wear as many hats as they must to get the job done. Why do we do this? Because the cause is worth it, we say! We will sacrifice everything because the cause is worth it! We fight and fight until we are so worn out that we throw up our hands and shout, “I am through!”

Hiring a consultant to help your organizations fundraise, strategize or streamline will help you maximize your efforts. If you are in non-profit, then you are trying to make a difference. You will not be able to do your job well if you are trying to do so many jobs that are not core to what you’re supposed to be accomplishing that you are unable to do your job at all. Consultants are masters at placing people in their giftings and maximizing the efforts of a group. They will be able to tell you how to work and take care of some of these tasks in a smooth and efficient manner instead of spreading yourself too thin to get jobs done that you were never hired to do in the first place.

When you are more efficient, you are more effective. When you are more effective you have a greater impact. If your organization can be more efficient, call a consultant and watch your team transform in front of your eyes.

One of my most prized testimonials since starting my own consultant’s business 8 years ago is from Kathy Fyfe, Executive Director for the Epilepsy Association of Calgary (EAC) whom I helped with various fundraising projects for about 4 years. In fact, this testimonial sparked my creativity for the picture in my Blog ?

“We were literally drowning as a result of the impact of the 2013 floods in Calgary and needed to reconnect with existing donors as well as reach out to new ones. With Mitch’s skill and expertise, not only did Mitch help increase our annual donations, he helped secure a number of three year commitments and foundation grants. EAC was in need of a life raft, which Mitch ably provided and we’re looking forward to a continued working relationship. Thank you, Mitch!”

If you would like to speak with Kathy or any of my other references to determine if I’m the right fundraising consultant for your nonprofit organization and/or for you to learn more about how my ability, experience, and skills may be able to help benefit your nonprofit, or a nonprofit you may be associated with, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me, as I would be pleased to pass on my references and contact information to you and/or meet and discuss the opportunity of working together and provide you with any other information you require.
