Let’s trust we can all personally help make a difference
It is easy to get down in the mouth about the state of the world, as sometimes it seems like things are coming at us fast and furious and not all good. Sometimes I feel the world is more bad than good, (and I am a very optimistic person), but it is people like my wonderful partner in life who remind me regularly of all of the good not to ignore.
I know people have told me various negative things when I have asked them for a donation before as a professional fundraiser, for example: what can my donation do to make a difference to the big scheme of things, or it is the governments responsibility, or there is just to much wrong in the world to make a difference – and at the end of the day the world is falling apart anyhow.
It is imperative that we are not all of this mind set, as we all know from reading or going to seminars on the power of positive thinking that if everyone were to think these negative thoughts, it would be a self fulfilling prophecy (“a self-fulfilling prophecy is when a person unknowingly causes a prediction to come true, due to the simple fact that he or she expects it to come true. In other words, an expectation about a subject, such as a person or event, can affect our behavior towards that subject, which causes the expectation to be realized.”)
I have seen it first hand that government and other various bodies of funding are making cutbacks to nonprofits. Various nonprofit organizations are being stripped of their funding from places like FCSS (Family and Community Support Services), and United Way is requiring nonprofits to be more outcome driven and/or they no longer meet their funding mandate.
In addition, gaming revenue is now spread over so many more nonprofits, so when nonprofits once received around $90,000 per casino once a year, the casino revenues are down to about $65,000 every 18 months. Couple this with the state of the world economy regarding the oil & gas crisis, specifically in Alberta, it is imperative that we personally don’t lose our philanthropic spirit and our trust that many nonprofit organizations are using our money wisely and it is greatly needed.
It is better to do something with your time and/or give what you can with your wallet, as it does make a difference. If you are concerned regarding this, ask a nonprofit to show you what they are doing from year to year, read their financial statements, as this information needs to be transparent so we know where our hard earned money or time is going.
Let’s make sure we keep organizations on track with how the money is been used that we are donating, but let’s not stop donating because we think it is someone else’s responsibility or my small donation can’t make a difference. We need to trust that we can all make a difference giving of our time and/or money; so let’s keep helping those organizations who deserve it – and since there are so many organizations who do, it is up to us to keep nonprofit organizations accountable for our donation.
