How to hire the “right” professional fundraiser for your project:

Here are a few points worth thinking about before a nonprofit hires a professional fundraiser for a project with which they require support. These points are worth considering regardless of the type of fundraising project i.e. special event, annual or capital campaign, researching & grant writing, or finding donors and/or sponsors for your programs and services.

1. Check out their Bio – what skills are you looking for? If it is sales, what is their track record with various nonprofits in creating relationships and making the ask to garner support whether it be financial or Gift in Kind (GIK).

2. Make sure the professional fundraiser is member of Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP). Legally, it is not a requirement; but if they are members, they are subject to the terms and conditions of the AFP Code of Ethical Principles and Standards adopted in 1964 and amended in 2007. If they are also a Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE), (which you can only be by being a member of AFP), they would have written and passed a very rigorous exam regarding many aspects of fundraising and would be required to maintain ongoing professional development.

3. Protect your rights in writing. You must have a written contract with a fundraiser clearly describing his or her responsibilities and your organization’s rights and expectations. These expectations should be fair to both parties in order to create a win-win relationship between the fundraiser and nonprofit. For example, determine a reasonable period of time to work together in order to achieve the desired results. You know the old saying, “Rome wasn’t built in a day”, so keep this in mind in negotiating a fair amount of time for the fundraiser to raise an agreed upon amount of money.
